When I was young, my grandmother had a coffee tin which depicted waiters serving coffee to ladies at a fancy restaurant. The ladies were wearing large hats and long, flowing dresses. Elegance perfected. With that memory in mind, I looked to the city streets of my Danish homeland for inspiration for this painting and, with a good dosing of French charm, these Victorian cats came to life. Sophisticated and refined, what could be better than eating fine cakes in Europe? Lucy Skunk, a character from my picture book series Hector Fox & Friends, would certainly wish she could join the cats and I’m sure she would also be properly attired for the occasion.
