Leonard Baskin: Divine Comedy Watercolors
In 1969, Leonard Baskin painted 120 large scale drawings for his seminal rendition of Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. These powerful works typify both the artist’s and the writer’s unflinching dedication to the universal qualities of the human condition. We are proud to present this groundbreaking collection.
The following works were published in Thomas G. Bergin’s translation. Grossman Publishers, New York, 1969.
An exhibition of select works from this project was shown at Yale University in 1970 and was circulated as a traveling exhibition by the Smithsonian Institution from 1970-1972. Read the essay from the exhibition catalog here.
