The sibyls, or female prophet, was a series Baskin did in a variety of media but culminated in two major sculptures, this one, and Sibyl with Crow. The bird imagery so predatory in his earlier work takes on a more complex spirituality in this series. Ancient Greek fortune-tellers would read the flights of birds (or their entrails) to forecast the future.
