Related to the Seated Fat Man of the same year shown elsewhere in this exhibit, the bloated figure with the laurel crown is one Baskin used a few times, notably in the Death of the Laureate wood engraving and the large monumental Poet Laureate woodcut. It was emblematic of Baskin’s opinion of much of the American Art scene, an icon of wasted talent. In particular it is a bitter homage to the poet Dylan Thomas who drowned his gift with alcohol. A cast of this is in the permanent collection of the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian in Washington, D. C.
