“Saul knows the prophecy, that the young harpist, David, will usurp his crown. Bedecked in a top-heavy crown, Saul is jealous, spent, resigned to his fate. The rhythm of brushwork, in the drapery, garments and landscape, coupled with masklike visages, hearken back to early Renaissance. Primary colors are applied with palette knife, brush-glazed with dark accents, and allowed to dry, before the process unfolds over again, creating porcelain surfaces.”
